Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield were both designated New Towns on 20 May 1948. Welwyn has an area of 1,747 ha (4,317 acres), and Hatfield covers an area of 947 ha (2,340 acres).

Travel and transport.

Welwyn & Hatfield are two towns about 20 miles from London, near the M25 London Orbital Motorway and the A1(M).

Employment. Welwyn Hatfield is the base for a number of influential manufacturers in the fields of engineering and electronics pharmaceuticals, food processing and high technology. Major employers include Computacenter, Vodapage, Microgen and Xerox.
A major commercial development is taking place on the former British Aerospace site at Hatfield. Already, the Hatfield Business Park has become established and has brought thousands of jobs to the area.

Population. According to the last Census report of 2001, the Welwyn Hatfield Council area has a population of 97,546.

Current Project

Hatfield town centre renewal : English Partnerships and Welwyn Hatfield Council are working together to bring forward plans for the redevelopment of Hatfield Town Centre East, as a cornerstone to the parties’ wider regeneration aims for the town.
