Tees Valley

The Tees Valley stretches from Darlington in the west to Hartlepool on the coast, with a population of 651,000. English Partnerships is involved in the Tees Valley not only as a founding partner of the Tees Valley Regeneration, the Urban Regeneration Company, but also through our ownership of land in the region and our commitment to housing renewal throughout the area.
The vision for the Tees Valley is to build a competitive economy around a confident and vibrant society in a liveable and sustainable environment. The River Tees is mid-way between the Newcastle / Sunderland city region and Leeds at the heart of the Northern Way, a key plank in the delivery of the Governments Sustainable Communities agenda.
Travel and transport. There is a high-speed rail link to London on the east coast mainline from Darlington, and the A1(M) forms the western boundary of the area. Durham Tees Valley Airport serves many destinations with direct flights to not only London Heathrow but also to Paris and Amsterdam.
Employment. As at March 2005, the total unemployment figure was 3.6%, but with a disproportionate 5.5% of the adult male population registered as unemployed. Seventy-seven per cent of employment is now in the service industry, a major change from the former domination of petrochemical and steel works in the area.
