Stevenage

Profile

Stevenage was the first New Town following the introduction of the New Towns Act in 1946 and was designated on 11 November 1946. Originally a small market town, Stevenage has rapidly grown into a major commercial centre with an area of 2,532 ha (6,256 acres) in the heart of the commuter belt.

Travel and transport. Stevenage is located 30m  north of London, close to the M25 Orbital motorway and within close distance to three major airports: London Luton, London Stansted and Heathrow.

Employment. The town is a centre for electronics, light engineering, aerospace, information technology, pharmaceuticals and financial services. Employers include GlaxoSmithKline, Dixons, ICL and John Lewis.

Population. According to the last Census report of 2001, the population for Stevenage is 79,790.

Current Projects

English Partnerships is currently involved in the following projects in and around Stevenage:

  • Stevenage Town Centre Regeneration : English Partnerships and Stevenage Borough Council have forged a partnership with various other key stakeholders to bring about major redevelopment of Stevenage town centre.
  • West Stevenage : English Partnerships owns a 28 ha former waste disposal site adjacent to the A1 in Stevenage that, subject to planning approval, could be brought forward for development along with adjoining land holdings to relieve housing pressure in the area.
