Scotswood Housing Expo
At the start of the redevelopment of Scotswood, in the west end of Newcastle, there will be an expo of a range of demonstration housing types to highlight what will be built over the life of the regeneration project.
The expo is expected to be open to the public and housing professionals in 2010.
Housing led scheme
The project involves the delivery of a major new housing led mixed use scheme in the west end of Newcastle, some two miles from the city centre.
The house types range from one bedroom apartments to five bedroom houses, with a mix of types and phasing. There is also 2,300 sq m of retail floorspace (including 1,000 sq m for a single convenience store), 3,000 sq m of commercial floorspace, 900 sq m of community floorspace and if required, a primary school.
Public-private partnership
To deliver the new homes, Newcastle City Council is currently in the process of selecting a private sector partner to form the Scotswood Urban Regeneration Vehicle. This will be a public-private partnership made up of the City Council, English Partnerships and Bridging Newcastle Gateshead, together with the development partner.
Project progress
A masterplan covering the 60 ha has been produced for the area by Urban Initiatives on behalf of Newcastle City Council. The outline planning application, based on the masterplan, provides for 1,800 units to be brought forward in five phases over 15 years.
