Register of Surplus Public Sector Land
Background
English Partnerships has created and maintains The Register of Surplus Public Sector land on behalf of Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and in collaboration with other government departments, their sponsored bodies and other public sector organisations.
The Register provides a single reference point for all participating public sector organisations on the available national supply of surplus land and helps to ensure that wider government objectives, including housing needs and regional economic and housing strategies, are factored into land disposal decisions.
A wide cross-section of public sector organisations have supplied information to the Register including Defence Estates, British Railways Board (Residuary) Ltd, NHS Estates, The Highways Agency and The Coal Authority. Once the disposing agency has provided English Partnerships with details of the site for inclusion on the Register, there is a 40 working day window for public sector agencies and departments to identify new uses for this land. If the sites can be used beneficially elsewhere in the public sector they may be transferred at market value and then be brought back into beneficial use.
Current Status
To date around 70 public sector agencies have supplied details of more than 750 sites, totalling approximately more than 5,000 ha of land. Almost 300 sites are within the wider South-East.
The Register data is currently only available to central government departments, their sponsored bodies and associated public-sector agencies such as NHS Trusts and local authorities. For further information, please contact us using the online contact form.
The interactive web-based Register is now operational and representatives of the above bodies can apply for a user name and password to access the database via the internet or Government Secure Intranet.
