Sustainable Energy Review

English Partnerships commissioned this report by Energy for Sustainable Development Ltd to review sustainable energy for approximately 100 brownfield sites funded and managed by English Partnerships. The majority of these sites are former colliery sites, but sites previously used for military and industrial purposes have also been included. The review found that we have a unique opportunity to establish a responsible approach to energy supply and demand as a key factor in realising our mission. By developing a clear and coherent energy strategy, and effectively delivering its implementation, English Partnerships can take a leading role to show that sustainable communities are achievable.

Urban Design

Urban Design Compendium 1 : Urban Design Principles

Published in partnership with The Housing Corporation, the Compendium examines the factors that make neighbourhoods stimulating and active places in which residents feel comfortable and safe. It aims to provide accessible advice to developers, funding agencies and partners on the principles of urban design and how these can be applied in practice. It is designed to provide a source of best practice to all those involved in the regeneration and development industries. Published August 2000. 2nd edition 2007.

Urban Design Compendium 2(UDC 2): Delivering Quality Places

Published in partnership with The Housing Corporation, the Urban Design Compendium 2: Delivering Quality Places provides guidance on the processes which support delivery of successful, sustainable development. The UDC2 contains a range of case studies which provide examples of how specific barriers have been overcome in delivering good urban design. Together with the guidance text these should promote and understanding of how the best projects deliver quality. Published September 2007.

Sustainable Urban Extensions: Planned through Design

Sustainable Urban Extensions describes the work undertaken by English Partnerships, supported by The Prince´s Foundation, to radically improve the social, economic and environmental sustainability of new housing development on greenfield land. The document sets out the "Enquiry by Design" process, conclusions drawn from a seminar held in London and workshops in Basildon and Northampton in 1999. It is supported by the CPRE and DETR.
