Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Quality and Innovation

A hallmark of our work is to continually increase the standard and quality of places and deliver innovative solutions. Examples include creating new funding mechanisms or introducing environmentally friendly ways of dealing with flood risk.

Quality homes

Following on from our Millennium Communities programme, the Design for Manufacture competition, continued to drive up quality and innovation in the house building industry. It challenged the sector to design quality homes with a construction cost of £60,000, while continuing to meet the usual high standards expected by English Partnerships.

Environmental sustainability

Building on these experiences and pushing the boundaries further, particularly those relating to environmental sustainability, we are running the Carbon Challenge. The Challenge will pioneer cutting edge technology to create a number of communities across the country that meet Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes – achieving zero carbon and helping to accelerate the housebuilding industry’s response to climate change.

The development of our first site, Hanham Hall, near Bristol, will involve the preservation of a Grade II listed building and its transformation into a centre for the new community, demonstrating our commitment to retaining heritage assets for the benefit of future generations.

Innovative ways of working

Helping to bring about development using innovative ways of working is key to English Partnerships’ role.

In Telford, the Woodside Estate, is to undergo a multi-million pound transformation with English Partnerships’ investing £17.3m, the Housing Corporation £22.16m and Wrekin Housing Trust £5.9m, to deliver 1,225 new homes and refurbish 300 others.

Well designed places

Underpinning all of our work are English Partnerships’ Quality Standards, which include standards on space, noise and overheating plus guidance on water management and flood prevention. All of our projects must meet these standards to ensure English Partnerships continues to create high quality, well designed places.

Our Urban Design Compendium is recognised nationally and internationally as being a leading best practice guide to the delivery of good urban design.
