North Shore, Stockton-on-Tees
Background
North Shore comprises 20 ha (52 acre) of derelict land, situated east of Stockton town centre opposite the University of Durham´s Stockton Campus on the River Tees. The 10-year development scheme is expected to lead to an overall investment of £140m in Stockton.
The North Shore development will transform Stocktons riverside and bring more than 2,500 new jobs to the area. The site has already benefited from nearly £20m of public investment in reclamation and infrastructure and including £3.5m from the EU's European Regional Development Fund
The business park will build on close links with the University of Durham to attract knowledge-based enterprises to the area.
Current Status
The North Shore scheme is being developed with our partners, Tees Valley Regeneration (an Urban Regeneration Company), One NorthEast, Stockton Borough Council and the University of Durham.
Having recently been granted planning permission from Stockton Borough Council, on 17 November 2005 Tees Valley Regeneration and English Partnerships announced that AMEC will be the preferred developer to undertake the work. AMEC have also announced that they will be working with Urban Splash, an innovative housing and mixed use developer with a strong track record in bringing forward regeneration schemes.
The appointment is a tremendous coup for Tees Valley Regeneration and Stockton, and a first for the region.
Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd have completed reclamation and infrastructure works. The subsequent phases, which are underway, will include the construction of the North Shore Gyratory Road and a new bridge over the River Tees to link the site to the University of Durhams Queens Campus. In addition, there is an extensive programme to landscape the area and develop the river frontage.
English Partnerships will invest £18m in the scheme over its lifetime.
