Brownfield Land
As the Governments specialist advisor on brownfield land, English Partnerships submitted recommendations for a National Brownfield Strategy for England in May 2007. These were formally adopted by government at the National Brownfield conference on 3 March 2008.
We are working to implement the strategy through supporting local authorities in the development of local brownfield strategies.
English Partnerships is supporting the development of brownfield skills through regional workshops, the Brownfield Guide and other publications including best practice notes.
The Housing Green Paper
The Housing Green Paper, Homes for the future: more affordable, more sustainable, emphasises the need to recycle homes and land.
The success of the Governments housing strategy is not just about building new homes, it depends just as much on making better use of existing buildings and maximising the use of brownfield land for building new homes. The need to reuse previously developed land and buildings is also restated in Planning Policy Statement 3: Housing (PPS3).
The National Brownfield Team is supporting this process by working with local authorities, helping them to understand and overcome those problems which are preventing some private and public brownfield sites from being brought back into use.
The Brownfield Guide
In December 2006 English Partnerships published The Brownfield Guide: a practitioners guide to land reuse in England.
This publication describes how brownfield sites may best be considered for reuse, whilst acknowledging that redevelopment may not always be appropriate. It also highlights the best practice approach to brownfield redevelopment adopted by English Partnerships.

Contamination and Dereliction Remediation Costs
(Best Practice Note (BPN) 27)
Estimating the cost of preparing a brownfield site for reuse is a complex exercise. Up to date and comprehensive information is essential to reduce the uncertainty and risk of underestimating the costs of remediation.
This BPN sets out guidance on assessing the costs of preparing, for redevelopment, previously developed land (PDL) or brownfield sites affected by contamination or dereliction. It also provides guidance on preacquisition site investigations, as part of due diligence, and expands the remediation costs to include the problems associated with dereliction.

PhD Studentship
English Partnerships and the University of Manchester are working together to appoint a PhD research student to complement ongoing collaborative research. They will develop techniques to measure the social consequences of the regeneration of brownfield land.
The PhD research student is from September 2008 for three years.
