Kings Waterfront, Liverpool
Background
Kings Waterfront extends to approximately 14.6 ha (36.06 acres) and has a prime waterfront location alongside the River Mersey, immediately to the south of the world renowned Albert Dock complex in Liverpool.
Part of the site lies within the proposed World Heritage Site. It was assembled in 1985-86 by dredging and in-filling three redundant branch docks and demolishing derelict dockside buildings on the former quaysides, which dated back to approximately 1907. The original masonry dock wall structures remain.
Current status
Kings Waterfront is English Partnerships largest northern regeneration project into which we are investing £75.6m. We are working closely with Urban Regeneration Company Liverpool Vision, North West Development Agency, Liverpool City Council and private-sector partners in the delivery of economic, physical and social regeneration resulting from investment in the site.
The scheme complements a waterfront strategy which includes Mann Island (with National Museums Liverpool) and Pier Head (cruise-liner landing stage and canal link), and also has an important relationship with wider city centre developments; notably Grosvenors Liverpool One retail development.
Kings Waterfront will create a visitor destination of international quality combining a 10,000 seat arena, 7,100 sq m convention centre, public piazza and exhibition facilities. Bovis Lend Lease was selected as construction partner for the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool in November 2004.
The scheme also includes 1,800 residential units, two hotels (by developer and contractor McAleer & Rushe), office, retail, leisure, community and open space uses.
Artisan is constructing 96 single-aspect apartments, 60 per cent of which will be shared equity, with a further 429 residential units by a David McLean/City Lofts joint venture.
