English Partnerships is providing up to £44.76m to help fund masterplanning, demolition and infrastructure works at Kidbrooke in Greenwich. This regeneration project is focused around the demolition of the Ferrier Estate situated within the Kidbrooke area– the regeneration project site extends to 109 ha.
Built in 1974, the Ferrier estate today is typical of many estates built in the 1960’s and 1970’s – single tenure, badly designed and failing – plagued by high levels of crime, vandalism, unemployment and deprivation. The Kidbrooke Vision – created through a partnership between English Partnerships, London Borough of Greenwich, the Housing Corporation and developer Berkeley Homes – calls for the creation of 4,400 new homes, of which at least 1,910 will be affordable, a new transport interchange, new commercial premises, new community facilities and the restructuring of the extensive open space within the area
The innovative and ambitious masterplan for Kidbrooke has been made possible largely because the partners involved have committed to up-front investment reaching almost £72m. The overall scheme will deliver shops, business units and may also include a new health centre and new community based buildings, as well as improved green spaces and a public square.
Public consultation on the plans for Kidbrooke took place during November 2007 and the outline planning application for the overall masterplan, together with a detailed application for Phase 1 will be submitted in Summer 2008.
