Kidbrooke, Greenwich
English Partnerships is providing up to £44.761m to help fund masterplanning, demolition and infrastructure works at Kidbrooke in Greenwich. The regeneration project is centred on the Ferrier Estate which sits at the heart of Kidbrooke and extends to 109 hectares.
Overview
The Ferrier estate, built in 1974 by the Greater London Council, is today representative of many estates built in the 1960s and 1970s single tenure, badly designed and failing plagued by high levels of crime, vandalism, unemployment and deprivation.
The Kidbrooke Vision was created through a partnership between English Partnerships, London Borough of Greenwich, the Housing Corporation and developer Berkeley Homes. This ambitious and innovative scheme calls for the demolition of the Ferrier estate and the creation of 4,400 new homes, of which at least 1,910 will be affordable.
The proposal for Kidbrooke has been made possible because the partners involved have committed to up-front investment reaching almost £72m. This gap-funding not only supports the need for new mixed-tenure housing but also the significant investment in infrastructure for the surrounding area.
The overall scheme will deliver a new transport interchange, shops, 100,000 sqft of office and business units, a health centre, community buildings as well as improved green spaces and a public square.
Current status
Public consultation on the plans for Kidbrooke took place during November 2007 and an outline planning application for the masterplan together with a detailed planning application for Phase One will be submitted to the London Borough of Greenwich in Summer 2008.
