Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Harlow Gateway Project

Harlow Gateway Project, previously known as Harlow Sports Centre, is situated at the gateway to the town centre. The brownfield site, owned by English Partnerships, covers an area of 11 ha.

Since 1959 the site has been leased to Harlow and District Sports Trust Ltd on a 100-year lease.

In partnership with Harlow Council, English Partnerships and the Sports Trust together with the wider Sports Partnership intend to bring forward plans to regenerate the site for housing development. These proposals are in line with Local Plan aspirations and the 2020 Vision – a community strategy that sets out a 20-year vision for the town - which was agreed in a joint working protocol between English Partnerships and Harlow Council in August 2001.

Also supporting the regeneration of Harlow is Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott who announced on 30 July 2003 that the town was due to receive a £10m cash boost for its Harlow Gateway Project.

The proposal for the site is to provide up to 450 new homes together with high quality leisure and community facilities on nearby regenerated brownfield land with easy access to the town centre and Harlow train station.

A new community football stadium is now complete and provides covered seating for up to 3,000 spectators. The stadium benefits not only Harlow Town FC but the whole community.

Work is currently progressing on the new athletics track and a developer was appointed in August 2007 to construct the new £25m leisure centre. Work is due to begin on the leisure centre in Spring 2008 with an anticipated completion late 2009.

In September 2007 planning permission was granted for 530 new homes and work is already under way on the first phase.
