Craylands & Fryerns, Basildon
Background
The Craylands Estate and Fryerns School site are situated less than two miles from Basildon town centre. There are currently 971 homes on the estate, which was developed in the 1960s. The Craylands Estate has a reputation for isolation, poor quality housing and inadequate social amenities. Adjacent to the Craylands Estate is the site of the former Fryerns School and playing fields. The school closed in 1994.
In July 2003 the Fryerns & Craylands Estate Renewal Scheme was awarded £18.5m from the first round of the Sustainable Communities Plan. In June 2005 English Partnerships became the lead partner on the scheme. The overall project aims to re-model the Craylands Estate and redevelop the former Fryerns School site as a new sustainable community.
Current Status
English Partnerships is working in partnership with Basildon District Council, Essex County Council, the Housing Corporation, Basildon Primary Care Trust and other key stakeholders to deliver this project.
Since becoming lead partner English Partnerships has appointed PRP as masterplanner and Capita Symonds lead consultants on the project.
During 2005 and 2006 English Partnerships undertook a detailed consultation process with the local community, to understand the needs and concerns of Craylands residents. The feedback from local residents helped to guide the creation of a development framework.
Outline planning permission for the overall scheme was approved in November 2006, with the detailed design for phase one of the scheme given the green light in April 2007.
