East Cowes, Isle of Wight
English Partnerships and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) are working together to develop a masterplan for the regeneration of East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The project involves the comprehensive redevelopment of 13 ha (32 acres) in the centre of East Cowes, including a substantial area of the towns waterfront.
The East Cowes Project is a mixed use development with four main elements:
- Revitalisation of East Cowes town centre
- Creation of a new marine quarter on the waterfront
- Relocated and enhanced ferry marshalling facilities
- New residential development (approximately 550 homes)
Consultation
The proposals have been formulated through extensive consultation with local residents and businesses, the Isle of Wight Council and a number of other stakeholders including the Environment Agency, English Nature, English Heritage and The Crown Estate.
Development phasing
SEEDA and English Partnerships are proposing to phase the development of the East Cowes site over a number of years with the final phase due for completion in 2015.
The masterplan for the East Cowes Project was approved for outline planning permission in July 2006 and SEEDA and English Partnerships are now seeking to finalise the Section 106 agreement in conjunction with the Isle of Wight Council.
Once the Section 106 Agreement is in place English Partnerships will seek a development partner to prepare detailed proposals for the initial phase of housing.
In the interim a major piece of infrastructure work will begin in East Cowes in October heralding the start of the planned East Cowes development.
The multi-million pound road will link Old Road with Well Road and is being made possible by us and SEEDA.
