Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

CL:AIRE

Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments (CL:AIRE) stimulates the regeneration of contaminated land in the UK by raising awareness of, and confidence in, practical and sustainable remediation technologies. Established in 1999, CL:AIRE is an independent, not-for-profit organisation.

CL:AIRE is part-funded by English Partnerships. A representive of English Partnerships sits on Cl:AIRE’s Board of Trustees.

CL:AIRE fulfils the need for objective, scientifically robust appraisals of remediation technologies and effective methods for monitoring and investigating sites. Its Technology and Research Group (TRG) draws on some of the foremost professionals and academics within the field to provide credible, third party appraisals of remediation technologies.

Technology demonstration and research projects

CL:AIRE encourages technology demonstration and research projects to raise industry's awareness of, and confidence in, technologies that have been applied on real sites. From these projects, CL:AIRE can provide all those with an interest in contaminated land with documented, high-quality, and scientifically-robust demonstration reports that appraise available remediation technologies.

CL:AIRE’s aim is to build a portfolio of these technology demonstration and research projects. The projects use different technology providers, under different conditions and show successes as much as lessons learnt. This means a thorough understanding of the application of a technology can be achieved. To do this, CL:AIRE actively seeks the participation of site owners, consultants, developers, remediation companies and technology providers to become project partners.

CL:AIRE accepts a variety of projects which are evaluated on their technical merits by the Technology and Research Group against a transparent set of criteria.

English Partnerships and CL:AIRE

CL:AIRE is part-funded by key government stakeholders in recognition of the importance of its work:

English Partnerships sits on CL:AIRE’s Board of Trustees and has supported CL:AIRE from its inception. When appropriate, English Partnerships' remediation projects are submitted as CL:AIRE projects. The final outputs are reported as summary findings and experiences, which are then made available to any interested party through CL:AIRE.
