Planning for Climate Adaptation Conference

RIBA, London

19/05/2008

Planning for Climate Adaptation is a major new conference from the Guardian. This day is designed for public service executives responsible for the environment, emergency planning, strategic policy, transport, risk management and asset management.

In the first major national conference of its kind, the Guardian has brought together the key thinkers, policy makers and politicians, to debate what guidance is needed to prepare our public services in the face of climatic challenges. Will buildings, homes, schools or hospitals be able to cope and remain insurable? Are we prepared for the public health implications? Are our emergency services equipped to react to a new set of dangers? And where will the funds come from to solve these challenges?

Steve Carr, Director of Policy and Economics, English Partnerships will be chairing a Building and Planning stream which will look at issues such as planning for the government’s promise to build three million environmentally friendly new homes by 2020 and how we can prepare the existing building stock for the future.

With leading case studies from the British Red Cross, SEEDA and Oxfordshire County Council alongside presentations from the people shaping this debate, Planning for Climate Adaptation will provide you with fresh perspectives and ideas to take back to your organisation.

Carbon Challenge exhibition

Launch Pad Gallery, The Building Centre, London WC1E 7BT

02/06/2008 to 21/06/2008

The Carbon Challenge aims to accelerate the housebuilding industry’s response to climate change by fast-tracking the creation of a number of zero carbon communities. The new communities will be designed to meet the highest level of the Code of Sustainable Homes whilst still delivering quality and high standards of design.

The Challenge will assist housebuilders to develop the skills and technology needed to meet the Government’s 10-year environmental goals for new housing.

This exhibition focuses on the first Carbon Challenge site, Hanham Hall, near Bristol. The preferred developer for this site is Barratt Development Plc with HTA, ARUP, Kingspan Offsite and Sovereign Housing. The exhibition will explore both this successful bid and the four shortlisted schemes.

The bids address issues including:
• sustainability, including energy and water supply
• the construction methods which have been proposed
• how to ensure the Grade II listed Hanham Hall be preserved and best used.

The exhibition is free for everyone to attend and is open 9.30am to 6.00pm Monday - Friday and 10.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday.
