Basildon Town Centre Regeneration

Profile

English Partnerships and the Basildon Renaissance Partnership are working jointly on the regeneration of Basildon town centre. While economically the area is buoyant, the town centre does not currently provide the environment and the services required by a modern society. The shopping centre has fallen into decline over the past few years due to lack of investment and increased competition from neighbouring towns.

To assess the options and capacity for the town centre, a study has been completed that identifies the key areas for redevelopment and assesses what improvements can be made in both retail and housing terms.

In September 2007, English Partnerships announced its commitment to provide funding for a programme of public realm improvements.  This will enable work to begin on the town centre prior to the appointment of the preferred strategic development partner for Basildon’s overall £1bn regeneration programme.

Design consultancy Small Back Room was appointed in January this year to deliver the local awareness and advertising campaign for Basildon town centre up to March 2009.

Basildon is located within the Thames Gateway, one of four housing growth areas in England.
